Students will be researching Australian animals in order to prepare a presentation for the class. The children will be divided into groups to research and present about Tasmanian devils, koala bears, kangaroos, or platypi. This IA will provide links for the children to research their animal.

Introduction

You are a wildlife biologist embarking on an exciting journey to Australia. Hogle Zoo is sending you to discover the most unique animal on the whole continent of Australia. You will be assigned to a team that will research either Tasmanian devils, koala bears, kangaroos, or platypuses. Your job is to prepare a presentation to convince Hogle Zoo's directors to create their new exhibit entitled "Australia's Most Amazing Animal" around your animal. In order to convince the directors, you will need to be an expert on your animal. To become an expert you will need to know about your animal's characteristics, habitat, what they eat and their life cycle.

Task
You will use the resources from this WebQuest to find information that will help to get you started off on the right foot for your presentation. As you navigate the websites, you will learn about the animal's physical characteristics, habitat, what they eat and their life cycle. This WebQuest will provide you with the information that you need in order to create your final group presentation.

Process

You will be working in a group of six students to prepare your final presentation.
Day 1
I will assign you and a partner from your group two websites from the resource list to look at together, however both of you will fill out a worksheet on only one resource. You will be responsible to fill out the worksheet for the resource listed at the top of your worksheet. Make sure you write a lot on your worksheet because it will be a valuable resource for your presentation. (Look down at the Assessment section for the grading rubric for your worksheet.)
Day 2
Today you will meet as a whole group to share the information you found from your websites. Each person in the group will present the information from their worksheet. As a group you will fill out the the group worksheet to decide what websites will work best for the different categories you need to present to the class.
Days 3-6
As you work on your presentation you will be able to access this WebQuest throughout the remaining days set aside for working on your project. Remember to look at your worksheets to remind you of the information you found about your animal on the different websites so you can find pictures and information to use in your presentations. (To see how you will be graded on your final presentation, look under the assessment section at the Final Presentation rubric.)
Day 7
Today you will practicing your presentation with your group and tying up any loose ends.
Day 8
Today is the big day to convince Hogle Zoo's directors that your animal should be in their new exhibit about Australia. Come prepared to persuade the directors that your animal is "Australia's Most Amazing Animal!"
