Throughout world history, many groups of people have had their civil rights taken away by their own government. These groups who have been disenfranchised have responded in different ways. Your job is to look at one of the following topics/groups in depth. Use the links listed, but feel free to do some outside research if something really sparks your interest.

You will be responsible for being the "expert" on your topic/group. In a few days, we will reconvene and share what we've discovered with a small group of 3-4 people.

You can do many things to organize your research. You may choose from the following list (or ask me to do something quite different!):
  • Research paper
  • Facebook profile, complete with status updates, info, etc. (ask me for a document you can fill in)
  • A personal diary or journal
  • An artistic representation (with a brief caption explaining the work)
  • A collection of poetry
  • A short story (this can be fictional, but it will need to be historical fiction)
Here are some questions to help guide your thinking:
  • Who was/were the group(s) of people deprived of civil rights?
  • Where did this occur?
  • What did the government(s) in question do to deprive the groups of their civil rights?
  • How did the deprived respond to their lack of freedoms?
  • What was the end result?
If you don't know what you would like to research yet, look around this site. It has a lot of historical and current civil right issues:
